Bread for the World:

Living the sacraments with scarce resources

SCP National Conference, 2010

14th-16th July

The Southwell and Nottingham Chapter invites members to the East Midlands to explore with us the theme “Bread for the World”.

We will look at the role and place of the eucharist in the life and mission of the church, paying attention to the diverse settings in which we, as priests, minister today, e.g. the rural multi-parish benefice, the city centre parish with an eclectic congregation or a significant multi-faith context, or perhaps a church with a wider deanery or diocesan remit.

Driving questions we hope to address include

  • how do we remain faithful to the church’s vision and understanding of the eucharist when resources, both human and material, are stretched, and
  • what does it mean, both theologically and practically, to sustain a eucharistic community in these varied contexts?

Where are we?

For the conference we will be based at Rutland Hall, on the University of Nottingham “University Park campus”, apart from the trips out detailed below.

  • Rev'd Prof. Alison Milbank, and

Thursday

This is when we travel to three different contexts in which to see and experience examples of eucharistic living, to help illuminate both our own settings and those of others.

Fr Joe Kennedy, from the College of the Resurrection, Mirfield, will act as a theological animateur for the day.

  • In the morning we visit one of the churches in the Nottingham City centre parish of St Mary's, St Peter's and All Saints';
  • The middle of the day we are at the cathedral and parish church of Southwell Minster, set in a market town, for Mass and lunch; and
  • In the afternoon, we are at the parish and Shrine of Our Lady of Egmanton for Benediction, itself part of a seven parish rural benefice.

In the evening we will have our conference banquet, at which our after-dinner speaker will be Rt. Rev’d Jack Nicholls, the former Bishop of Sheffield.

Friday

We spend the morning at at St John the Baptist, Beeston, a parish church just outside the university campus.

We have

  • a panel discussion on the theme, with representatives able to articulate issues from a multi-faith perspective, from the 'secular' city perspective and from an urban parish setting;
  • The AGM, and
  • Concelebrated Mass;

(followed by an informal, buffet style lunch) which concludes the conference.
